Shopify Developers and Experts for Australian Businesses
Shopify store development is the work of turning a Shopify subscription into a store that is ready to take orders: the theme, the product and collection structure, payments, shipping, tax, apps and the tracking that shows what sells. The platform makes the basics easy. The decisions around it are what separate a store that sells from one that only looks finished.
wow.digital is a Shopify agency and Shopify Partner with more than 15 years of experience in web development and SEO, building and improving Shopify stores for businesses across Australia. Based in North Adelaide, we work with retailers in every state, and we set each store up for how Australian customers actually buy: GST-inclusive prices, local shipping carriers and the payment methods shoppers here expect.
This page covers what a Shopify build includes, the Australian setup most guides skip, what it costs, and how to tell whether Shopify is the right platform for your business in the first place.

What Shopify Store Development Includes
A complete build covers more than choosing a theme. These are the parts we scope on every project:
- Shopify web design. A Shopify theme customised to your brand, or a custom Shopify theme when the store needs layouts a stock theme cannot give you.
- Catalogue structure. Products, variants, collections, filters and navigation planned so shoppers and search engines can both find things.
- Product pages. Photography layout, specifications, delivery and returns information, reviews and related products.
- Checkout and payments. Shopify Payments, PayPal and buy now, pay later options configured and tested.
- Shipping and tax. Zones, rates, free-shipping thresholds, pickup and GST settings.
- Shopify apps and integrations. Email platforms such as Klaviyo or Shopify Email, reviews, accounting and inventory tools, kept to the ones the store genuinely needs.
- SEO foundations. Titles, descriptions, headings, redirects, image optimisation and structured data.
- Conversion tracking. Ecommerce events recorded from product view through to purchase.
Set Up for Selling in Australia
Much of the Shopify advice online is written for the United States. An Australian store has its own requirements, and getting them right before launch avoids awkward fixes later.
- GST. If you are registered for GST, prices are normally shown inclusive of it and invoices need to show it. We configure Shopify's tax settings to match how you actually price.
- Payments. Shopify Payments is available in Australia, and many shoppers also expect PayPal and buy now, pay later options such as Afterpay and Zip.
- Shipping. Rates and labels for carriers such as Australia Post and Sendle, with sensible rules for bulky items, regional postcodes and express delivery.
- Returns and refunds. Policy pages written to be accurate under Australian Consumer Law and easy to find from the product page and footer.
- Selling overseas. If you ship to New Zealand or further, Shopify Markets can show local currencies and duties without running a second store.
Custom Shopify Development or a Theme
Most new stores do not need a fully custom build. A well-chosen theme, properly configured, covers the needs of the majority of small and mid-sized retailers and keeps the budget for photography and marketing.
Custom Shopify development earns its cost when a stock theme starts to get in the way: a product builder or bundle logic, unusual pricing rules, content-heavy pages that need their own layouts, or a brand that should not look like other stores on the same theme. We recommend one route after looking at your catalogue and how you sell, and we say so when the cheaper option is the right one.
Shopify Migration: Moving an Existing Store
A Shopify migration from WooCommerce, Squarespace, Wix or an older custom site is a project in its own right. Products, customers and order history can usually be brought across. What takes care is everything search engines already know about the old site.
We map every existing URL that has traffic or links to its new Shopify address, set up 301 redirects, carry across titles and descriptions that are already performing, and check the result in Search Console after launch. Skipping this step is the most common reason a store loses search visibility when it changes platform.
Shopify Development Cost in Australia
Price lists published by Australian Shopify agencies (checked October 2026) give a useful picture of what Shopify development costs in Australia. They describe the market in general, not a fixed wow.digital price list, and every store is quoted on its own scope.
- Theme-based store with standard apps: roughly $3,000 to $15,000
- Custom-designed store with integrations: roughly $12,000 to $30,000 or more
- Shopify Plus or heavily integrated builds: from about $25,000, up to $100,000
Shopify's own subscription is separate: AUD $56 a month for Basic, $149 for Grow and $575 for Advanced when billed monthly, with Plus from AUD $3,700 a month (Shopify pricing). Paid apps and payment processing fees are ongoing costs on top, so ask for each as its own line in a quote.
Our Shopify Development Process
1. Discovery
We review your products, margins, fulfilment, existing systems and the stores you compete with, and agree what the store has to achieve.
2. Structure
We plan collections, navigation, filters and page templates, and decide between a configured theme and a custom one.
3. Design and build
We design the key templates, build the theme, load or migrate products and configure payments, shipping and tax.
4. Test and launch
We place test orders on desktop and mobile, check emails, redirects and tracking, then launch and monitor the first orders.
5. Shopify support and maintenance
After launch we stay available for fixes, new sections, app changes, theme updates and ongoing Shopify SEO.
Hire a Shopify Developer in Australia: What to Check
Shopify web developers range from solo freelancers to large Shopify Plus agencies, and quotes for the same store can differ several times over. Before you hire a Shopify developer, these checks make the options comparable:
- Scope in writing. Page templates, number of products loaded, apps configured and rounds of revisions should all be listed.
- Who owns what. The Shopify account, theme, domain and app subscriptions should be in your name, with the agency added as a collaborator.
- What happens after launch. Ask whether Shopify support is included, for how long, and what it costs afterwards.
- Migration and SEO. If you have an existing site, ask how redirects and current rankings will be protected.
- Partner status. Shopify Partners build in development stores and hand them over properly. wow.digital is a Shopify Partner.
Our Shopify development services are quoted as a fixed scope, so you know what is included before work starts.
Shopify SEO
A store that cannot be found has to buy every visitor. Shopify handles some SEO basics well, such as sitemaps and canonical tags, and leaves the important decisions to you: how collections are structured, what each page is titled, how filters and variants create URLs, and what happens to old addresses when products change.
We treat Shopify SEO as part of the build. Collections are planned around real searches, product templates carry structured data, images are sized for speed, and redirects are in place on launch day. Ongoing SEO can continue from there: see our Shopify SEO service.
Is Shopify the Right Platform?
Shopify suits businesses that want to spend their time on products and marketing instead of running software. Hosting, security and checkout are handled for a monthly fee. It is less suited to stores where content matters as much as the catalogue, or where pricing and product rules are unusual enough to need heavy customisation.
If you are still deciding, our comparisons of Shopify and WooCommerce and WordPress and Shopify set out where each one fits. We build on both, so the recommendation follows the business. If WooCommerce suits you better, our WooCommerce developer page covers that side.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to develop a Shopify store in Australia?
Price lists published by Australian Shopify agencies in October 2026 put a theme-based store at roughly $3,000 to $15,000, a custom-designed store at roughly $12,000 to $30,000 or more, and Shopify Plus or heavily integrated builds from about $25,000 up to $100,000. Shopify's subscription, paid apps and payment fees are ongoing costs on top.
Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?
Yes. A Shopify developer or agency can build the whole store or only the parts you do not want to do yourself, such as theme customisation, product import, shipping and tax setup or a migration from another platform. wow.digital is a Shopify Partner and takes on full builds as well as smaller pieces of work.
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
It depends on whether you are paying for a fixed project or for ongoing hours. Fixed builds fall into the ranges above. Smaller jobs such as a theme change or an app integration are usually quoted individually, and some agencies sell blocks of support hours. Ask for a written scope so quotes can be compared like for like.
Are Shopify experts worth hiring?
For a simple store with a few products, Shopify is designed so an owner can set it up alone. Shopify experts earn their fee when the store needs a custom design, a migration that protects existing search traffic, integrations with other systems, or conversion improvements on a store that already has traffic.
Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?
For most product businesses that want a reliable store without managing hosting or security, yes. The monthly fee buys a maintained checkout, payments and updates. It is weaker value if you sell only a handful of items occasionally, or if your store needs rules that Shopify only supports on its most expensive plan.
How long does it take to develop a Shopify store?
It depends on scope more than on the platform. A theme-based store with a small catalogue is far quicker than a custom design with integrations or a migration. The usual causes of delay are product data, photography and policy wording, so having those ready shortens any timeline.
Can you migrate my existing store to Shopify?
Yes. Products, customers and order history can usually be moved. The part that needs the most care is redirecting your old URLs to the new ones so the store keeps the search visibility it already has.
Do you work with businesses outside the capital cities?
Yes. Regional businesses get the same process as those in Sydney or Melbourne: meetings happen by phone and video and the project is tracked online.
